Machiya is set to launch a brand new basement bar, Downstairs at Machiya, this week. Offering an extensive selection of sake, Japanese whiskey and creative cocktails, the new bar will also serve a menu of drinking snacks including wagyu sliders and pop-katsu skewers.
Diners from the main restaurant can retire “Downstairs” to the lower ground floor after their meal to enjoy unique cocktails in this cosy and intimate bar. Or for guests looking for a new drinking den, Downstairs at Machiya is the perfect hideaway to catch up with friends.
Quirky and fun cocktails are all priced at £9, with highlights including Jigglypuff (pictured above) – Portobello Gin, Campari, lemon & vermouth foam; Tequila Yuzu-Kosho Sour – Arette Blanco, yuzu, egg white, agave syrup, yuzu-koshu and chilli; and a Smokey Negroni – Lagavulin 16, Johnnie Walker Black, Umeshu, Antica Formula and Campari. Some unusual Japanese whiskies and sakes can also be found Downstairs at Machiya, including Yamazaki Limited Edition 2015, Taketsuru 21, Yamazaki 18 and Ryoma Japanese Rum.
Those eye-catching drinks are more than matched by a selection of Japan’s favourite bar snacks, including a wagyu slider topped with a fried egg, lotus root chips with miso-mustard mayo, a pop-katsu skewer with katsu sauce and a bowl of fiery Machiya hot wings.
Downstairs at Machiya has been beautifully appointed with a light wood counter, dark beams and modern decor in neutral tones. The intimate bar can accommodate 20 guests and will be open until midnight. The new bar launch follows the recent opening of Machiya, the all-day Japanese eatery that offers both traditional and non-mainstream Japanese dishes.
