M.R. Essojay (pronounced Mister Esso-jay) is a poet and author. His style of poetry often involves creating scenarios, jolting the imagination of listeners and entertaining them through each piece.

As a poet he fuses clever wordplay with witty punch lines to deliver the short stories. His book titled ‘Man Flu – The Book’ is a dramatic relationship fiction, titled ‘Man Flu’

because it considers the notion that unfaithfulness in a relationship is a disease that men suffer greatly from. ‘She Drives Me to Drink’ and ‘Arguments’ is the follow up poems to M.R.Essojay’s first short film ‘Some Women Just Can’t Go Down In Lifestyle’.

‘Some Women Just Can’t Go Down In Lifestyle’ is the debut short film written by the punchy poetic storyteller M.R. Essojay. M.R. Essojay who plays the role of Mike, battles with Sonia (Hirah Mohideen) in a tense relationship clash which features the fiery and short tempered female lashing out in rage at the mediocre lifestyle that accompanies Mike; her boyfriend.

The poem explains how Mike is dating the monster created by an ex-boyfriend, James, who spoilt Sonia and introduced her to a lavish lifestyle. Despite the relationship with James terminating, it appears she expects the same standard of living from Mike, who simply can’t keep up. ‘Some Women Just Can’t Go Down In Lifestyle’ highlights a key relationship issue with a very thought provoking ending which would certainly cause some individuals to re-think their stance on what matters most in a relationship. Putting aside the rhyming, the wordplay, and the heated moments, the short film simply raises a question. Is money really that important?

Just Sing…

No, I’m not talking about the song written by Gary Barlow!, I’m asking you to sing as if no-one can hear you! Singing has been said to be a major stress reliever; and if the truth be told, not everyone is going to sound like Aretha Franklin. However, taking time to put on your favourite song of the moment and singing as loud as you can, can really heighten your mood and act as a light reminder of just how phenomenal music is for not only your spirit, but your well-being overall.

Call A Friend….

Okay, so in this instance, we are not talking about calling a loved one while on ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’. Light conversation with a friend can really lift your spirits when you are feeling a little low. Hearing about their day and sharing in your experiences will help you to realise that you are really not alone. Even when you feel like the world is against you, there is always someone who is willing and able to lighten your load, if only for a while.

Indulge In Some Retail Therapy…..

The budget is of course dependent on your financial situation. But if the truth be told, you don’t have to invest a heavy amount of money to life your mood and put a much needed smile on your face. Buying a piece of costume jewellery or a small top from your local boutique will be major mood lifter and will help put a little bounce in your step.

Meditate and Visualise….

Meditation and visualisation may both be practices that you have heard of, but have never put into practice Some of the most successful figures in business, medicine, literature and entertainment swear by meditation and visualisation. For those of you who don’t know, meditation is the act of taking a few minutes outside of your daily routine to sit or lie down and think positive thoughts. There is substantial truth in the saying that you become or bring into your life what you think about the most. Taking time to meditate and focus on the things you do want will not only centre your thoughts but will also shape the way you think about yourself.

Smile…..

To smile is to open up your world. This is something I read once and it is very true. Have you ever smiled, even when you didn’t feel like it. Yet, feel slightly better for it when you did. A smile can help you to put on a brave face on even the worst circumstance and can help to influence your mood. You’re probably smiling now you’ve read this…..

Topshop is launching a multi-dimensional celebration of the British attitude and energy towards festival style through all its stores and digital platforms globally. British Festival style is one of the most heralded looks and Topshop is channeling that iconic style into product, content and entertainment. The campaign centres around ‘The discovery of music’ and will see live ‘secret pop-up gigs’ from the newest and coolest artists on i-tunes as well as established acts.

Atem Kuol and Daniel Mbaku. The names may sound unfamiliar now, but they are definitely one to watch out for. The 23 and 22 year old film makers from London are slowly but surely making themselves known within the media world.

Having begun his work behind the camera making music videos, Atem has directed and produced a range of documentary’s, short films, and tv pilots. Daniel also has a string of short films and documentaries below his belt, the most recent production being Murder to Excellence, a 30 minute documentary whose release coincided with Black History Month 2012. Murder to Excellence explores issues surrounding positive role models in black communities. In-spireLS spoke to Atem and Daniel about Murder to Excellence, forging a career behind the camera, and their inspiration.

Why Film Making? What inspired you to become film makers?

Atem: I wasn’t always into film making, in fact at college I studied electronics and I ran into the media industry through a random short course I did at The Roundhouse and my love for film making took off from there.

Daniel: I have always been inspired by films and documentaries from a young age, I have always been very curious on how films were shot and edited. I like documentaries because they examine the relationship of our stories to the truth.

How did you get into directing and producing?

Atem: I did work experience at the end of my first year of university with Mama Youth Project. I learnt to produce a show item for an urban life style magazine show called ‘What’s Up. My passion for Directing and Producing did not start until I started shooting music videos in 2009. I decided to jump in the deep end and after a few months I started helping out on professional shoots to get in-depth work experience and then progressed onto short films and documentaries.

Daniel: I studied Media Technology at Kingston University and the course opened doors to me directing films, documentaries and live television programmes. When I was younger I never had the passion to make films, I only enjoyed watching them, but the older I grew the more my passion developed.

Congratulations on your documentary, Murder to Excellence. Why did you decide to create this documentary?

Atem: The concept behind this Documentary came from the director Daniel Mbaku, someone who I have worked with on a variety of projects. He approached me in May and asked if I could produce the documentary, I said yes of course and we took it from there.

Daniel: The concept for Murder To Excellence came from a Ted Talk by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie, which dealt with the ‘Danger of a single story.’ After seeing this talk, I had a concept in my head by I never knew how to make it happen until I heard song from US Rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z entitled Murder To Excellence.

I had the idea when I was working on my final year project, Ringlife, however I knew it would be a challenge making this film because of the lack of resources and money. After discussing the idea with Atem, we had a brief meeting and saw how we could do it with no budget. The main aim of this documentary is to inspire and motivate young people, by giving them the self-belief and awareness that they can become more than just sports icons and musicians, which is often the common stereotype in the media today.

“Murder to Excellence is about young black people seeking positive role models and aspiring to greatness, regardless of their background.”

Murder to Excellence is about young black people seeking positive role models and aspiring to greatness, regardless of their background. Who are your role models, and who inspires you?

Atem: When I was younger I wasn’t into the media industry or looked up to any of the famous people I saw on TV, instead my role models were my parents, people like Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and people who stood for something.

Daniel: Growing up, I looked up to many people for inspiration, people in my family and people I see on TV. However, right now I look up to people like Ted Turner and Oprah Winfrey for different reasons that I rather keep to myself.

Of all the projects you’ve worked on, which was your favourite, and why?

Atem: I cannot answer that question, simply because of the fact that I have learnt a lot about my strengths/ weakness’s from every single film I have worked on to date. I have also had some great experiences, worked with fantastic cast and crew, there are also so many different aspects of various projects, which I have a strong passion for, but I cannot narrow it down to one single film or documentary……well not yet anyway.

Daniel: Murder to Excellence has to be my favourite project thus far because as a very small team with no budget we made a motivating short film, which I trust will have an impact on the black youth.

How would you personally describe your style of film making?

Daniel: I don’t think I have a style of filming, with every project I have different approach of filming relating to the subject matter. I gather a lot of inspiration from looking at the news and films. With Murder to Excellence, I wanted the subjects to tell their stories, so I filmed it like a news report with them sitting down and telling their stories. I decided not to use voice-overs because I wanted the viewers to feel the direct connection between them and the subject on the screen.

You are very educated, having received your degree this year. What was your degree in, and do you think your education has been important in progressing as a film maker?

Atem: My degree is in Television and Video technology. Yes I do believe education is important, but having a degree does not necessarily prepare you for the real life experiences film making brings. I feel that education is a good foundation into what you need to know, but until you are faced with real life production experience, you are totally oblivious as to what the real world holds.

Daniel: Thanks for the compliment, I studied Media Technology and I was very pleased with the course and the teaching staffs at Kingston University. Education is essential in everything we do in general, with that said; I don’t think you can be taught in theory how to be a film maker, I think you have to do it practically. Education helps to guide you, but a course like mine provided the opportunity to produce what you want, how you want it.

“When I was younger I wasn’t into the media industry or looked up to any of the famous people I saw on TV, instead my role models were my parents, people like Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela and people who stood for something.”

What advice do you have for young film makers looking to begin a career in a very competitive field?

Atem: I would advise all young film makers to only get into the industry if you have a genuine passion for film making or a love for film. They have to be willing to get as much work experience as possible, work their ass off and do a lot of freebies. Film making is a huge collaborative process and you have to keep an open mind with people and just know that the hours are long but if you are doing something you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.

Daniel: I don’t think I am in the position to give a young maker advice yet because I am a young filmmaker myself. However the one thing I would say is, go out there and film something and put it on the Internet. We are living in a social network era where so many people can see your work.

What positive quote do you try to live by?

Atem: Life is too short to be worrying about unimportant things or complaining, instead focus on your strengths and the things that make you happy.

Daniel: Lead, follow or get out of the way.

What is your ultimate aspiration as a director and producer?

Atem: My ultimate aspiration as a Director is to continue working hard and one day direct a feature film.

Daniel: My ultimate aspiration is to run a production company to produce films that will have positive impact in the world.

What’s next for Atem and Daniel?

Atem: I am 1st Assistant director on a short film called “Discord” and producing a web series, so watch this space.

Daniel: Currently, I am in the research process for the next documentary and working as a freelance camera operator.

The Glitter Beats are an exciting female DJ duo set to hit the music scene in 2013 with a bang. Formed in February by Tayla Richardson (DJ TwoTone) and Osayuki Vanessa Omo-Uwamere (DJ Yuki Love) after meeting on StarNow, they have combined their musical talents and created an unstoppable force which cannot be ignored.

From just one glance of these girls behind the decks, it is obvious that they love what they do. With the ability to work the crowd like no other, they don’t just simply mix music, DJing for them is a performance and during their sets you can see the girls having fun, interacting with the crowd, creating a sensational atmosphere, whether it is in a club, at a private event or a fashion show.

They have spent their time focusing on mixes and building their brand and have achieved so much in such a short period of time. They were the official DJ’s of High Street Fashion Week and have played in Aura Mayfair and Penthouse London. The girls have also been in high demand outside of London and bookings include Wonderland, the Cabana Club and Lola Lo.

Music lovers from an early age, although at first glance they may appear very different, their fusion of cultures, tastes and styles is part of their uniqueness and is what gives their mixes their distinct eclectic sound.
